Im 13. Jahrhundert im Besitz der Herren von Klingenberg, ging die Stadt am Main im 14. Jahrhundert an den Deutschen Orden über. Die Burg, „Burg Prozelten“ oder auch Henneburg (ein Huhn im Wappen) ist eine Gründung der Herren von Klingenberg aus dem 12. Jahrhundert; unter dem Deutschen Orden wurde sie bis in das 15. Jahrhundert hinein stark ausgebaut. Schließlich gelangten Burg und Stadt im Jahr 1483 an das Erzbistum Mainz, welches die Stadt als willkommenen Stützpunkt gegen die Grafen von Wertheim sowie das Bistum Würzburg verwendete, Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden die Stadtmauer mit Toren völlig abgetragen. Die Stadtkirche wurde Gotisch erneuert und stellt den Kern der Stadt dar, neben dem Rathaus aus dem Jahr 1520. Zahlreiche Fachwerkhäuser entlang der Hauptstraße stammen aus dem 16-17. Jahrhundert. Dominiert wird die Szene von der Ruine der Henneburg, die erstmals durch König Ludwig I. von Bayern im 19. Jahrundert umfassend saniert wurde. In the 13th century, the nobles of Klingenberg owned the town, which was founded in the 12th century although by these nobles together with the dominating castle. In the 14th century, the German Order got the possession of castle and town, and especially the castle was tremendously strenghend and enlarged within the 14/15th century. In 1486, the Archbishopric of Mainz got the possession and modernized castle and town as a welcome warhead against the intrests of the Counts of Wertheim and the Prince bishopric of Würzburg at the main river. Within the 19th century, town walls and gate houses were completely removed. The castle, called “Burg Prozelten” or also “Henneburg” (a chicken, the “Henne” within the crest) donates even today the prospect, and it was King Ludwig I. of Bavaria, who ordered an intensive preservation of the ruins first, this is still continuing. The town itself is stretched along the Main shore, and is dominated by the church (Gothic renewed) and half-timbered houses, of which many are still from out the 16-17th century.
