Spätromanische Gründung im 13 Jh. unter der Herrschaft des Fürstbistums Würzburg. Erhebung zum Markt mit Befestigung im 14. Jh; Seit dem Jahr 1413 unter der Verwaltung der Schenken von Limpurg. Die Bartholomäuskirche aus dem 13. Jh. einst mit eigenem festen Kirchhof, im 18 Jh entfestigt und mit neuem Langhaus versehen. Stadtbild in barocken Formen. Im Nordwesten die Frauenkirche aus dem 12. Jh mit teilweise erhaltener Kirchhofmauer (Wehrgang abgetragen), nach Bombardierung 1945 vereinfacht wieder aufgebaut. Teile der Stadtmauer (ohne Wehrgang) erhalten. Founded in late Romanesque time in 13th century under the possession of the Prince Bishopric of Würzburg, which used although the older settlement of the „Frauenkirche“ from the 12th century. Soon the village developed, got market- and fortification rights (“Marktflecken”). From 1413 onward, it was under administration of the very ambitioned nobles “Schenken von Limpurg” who had a castle in the village. The church “Sankt Bartholomäus” has had an own curtain, which was removed in the 18th century, when the nave was rebuild. Die village itself has fine buildings of Renaissance and Baroque, but many of them have been rebuild, after the village and the “Frauenkirche” were devastated by bombs in 1945.
